Goodbye to Single-Use Spray Bottles

Blueland is committed to making eco-friendliness effortless with its revolutionary cleaning products in reusable packaging. The team at Blueland reached out to Doris Dev to design (external designer Arthur Kenzo), engineer, source, and manufacture their next product.

The project aimed to change the game in the household cleaning category with a durable and attractive spray bottle that supported the company's mission of promoting reusability and reducing waste.

Re-thinking the Standards in the Cleaning Industry

Research into the cleaning industry shed light on the concerning trend of single-use spray cleaners, revealing that the vast majority of these products are intended for one-time use.

The available options were often visually unappealing and lacked the aesthetic appeal that consumers sought. The design team was tasked with creating a durable and attractive spray bottle that embodied Blueland's mission.

Design Development

Creating a One-of-a-Kind Look

The team worked closely with Blueland to ensure that the product was easy to use and refill, thereby promoting its reuse and reducing waste. The design featured a distinctive look that helped Blueland stand out in the crowded cleaning market and reinforced its commitment to sustainability. Finally, the use of unique materials sets the product apart from industry standards and conveys the durability and longevity of the design.

Engineering

The engineering team faced several key challenges during the development of the product, including the creation of a high-quality, transparent plastic vessel that was both aesthetically pleasing and cost-effective. Additionally, they were tasked with designing an ergonomic sprayer head that would provide a comfortable grip for extended periods of use. Through careful consideration and a thorough understanding of the end-user's needs, the team was able to successfully overcome these challenges and create a solution that was ready to enter production.

Manufacturing

Bringing a Sustainable Water Spray Bottle to Life

The success of a product relies heavily on the quality of its components, making it crucial to work with a reliable supplier. The Doris Dev sourcing team leveraged their extensive network to find a supplier that was well-equipped to overcome the challenges posed by the project. After evaluating numerous suppliers, the program was ultimately awarded to the one that best met the target quality, cost, and program requirements.

During the manufacturing stage, the team faced several unique challenges in producing the product. One of the biggest challenges was maintaining consistent production quality for a bottle with challenging proportions.

Another challenge was identifying a hydrophobic lubricant for the nozzle that could withstand the cleaning agent used in the product. Despite these difficulties, the team successfully overcame these challenges and produced a high-quality, sustainable water spray bottle.

The Results

The product launch was a success, taking place on Earth Day in 2019. Since its debut, the bottle has become a standout component of Blueland's best-selling kits and has received thousands of positive customer reviews, solidifying its popularity and customer satisfaction.

“The bottle looks classic and minimal on my bathroom counter.
I only have to use half a pump per hand wash and the soap does not leave my hands feeling tight or dry after use.”
