By Humandkind’s vision is to reduce global dependence on single-use plastic by creating personal care products that are healthier for the body and the planet. By Humankind was founded by Brian Bushell and Joshua Goodman.
The team reached out to Doris Dev to design, engineer, source, and manufacture the brand’s first deodorant. The goal of the project was to create a revolutionary deodorant packaging solution that's both compostable and refillable - eliminating traditional plastic waste.
ID Foundation
The industrial design journey began with a comprehensive examination of the brand's voice, the personal care category, and the competition. Research uncovered the significant waste generated by traditional single-use deodorant packaging and identified a need for a more user-friendly refill system. Entering a crowded category required that the design communicated By Humankind's unique value proposition and achieved a differentiated look and feel among other deodorant brands in the category.
A Quest for a Better User-Experience
Design Development
To address the design hurdles, several key decisions were made throughout the process. The shape of the container was optimized for material efficiency, reducing waste. Enhancing the user experience during the refill process was accomplished by introducing an intuitive and easily refillable deodorant cartridge system. To set the product apart from the competition, an uncomplicated yet dynamic design language was embraced to create a visually striking and powerful look.

Navigating Key Challenges
The Doris Dev engineering team navigated the path to production with innovative design solutions. Key engineering challenges included ensuring consistent deodorant advancement and designing snap-fit geometry to work with bioplastic's unique material properties. The outcome was a robust, ready-to-manufacture design.
Manufacturing
Bringing the Vision to Life
The team at Doris Dev faced a few manufacturing hurdles such as sourcing a new compostable material and creating a custom blend tailored to the deodorant application. A close collaboration with the producer led to the creation and perfection of the filling production process. The team was able to bring Blueland’s vision to life through mass production.
The Results
The By Humankind deodorant launched in February, 2019. The product is loved by customers for its exceptional quality, user-friendly features, and commitment to sustainability.
