Transforming the In-Home Beauty Routine

Canopy is not just any humidifier, it's the world's cleanest humidifier and the best-kept secret for healthy skin. This innovative product was incubated by Doris Dev, who led every aspect of the product's ideation, design, and development, resulting in a category-defining device with net positive margins and a low setup cost.

Canopy's mission is to help you unlock the full potential of your beauty and wellness routine at home. The goal was to create an elegant and user-friendly humidifier that could serve as an anchor point for the brand while being proudly displayed in your home.

Extensive Research Shaped Canopy's Design

The industrial design process began with an extensive exploration of the wellness and in-home beauty landscape.

Through thorough research, we discovered that although high humidity is a well-known beauty hack for healthy skin, most humidifiers on the market are not visually appealing and require frequent cleaning, which can be a hassle for users. Additionally, many humidifiers use a wet mist, which increases the risk of mold growth. To create a truly innovative product, we had to address these pain points.

The design development process began with the goal of creating a humidifier that could enhance people's skincare routines. We also aimed to make the device visually appealing, so it could serve as a stylish accessory in people's homes. Finally, we ensured that the humidifier could release moisture into the air without producing any mist, preventing the growth of mold.

The engineering team executed the industrial design vision through an iterative process of CAD design and prototype fabrication. One of the key challenges was achieving a balance between airflow, evaporation, and noise levels, which required significant effort from the team. Ultimately, we developed a custom fan to meet our performance and quality requirements. In addition, we worked closely with specialized blow molders to build a durable, drop-resistant tank that offered high value at a low cost.

Due to the uniqueness of Canopy, finding a supplier who was willing to create something beyond a basic ultrasonic humidifier proved to be challenging. Fortunately, we were able to work with a long-term supplier who was able to adapt their process to the specific requirements of the humidifier category, ultimately providing a solution.

Finding the Right Supplier

We faced another significant challenge during the manufacturing development of Canopy: developing a pure and highly absorbent ceramic that met the specific needs of our fragrance team. This was a complex task, as Canopy uses specialized non-fired ceramics that are not typically used with fragrances. Through multiple rounds of tooling modifications, improvements in assembly processes, and refining our quality control program, we were able to successfully produce the Canopy Humidifier.

The Results

The Canopy Humidifier launched in October 2020 to excited skincare customers. The product has over 500 five-star reviews on the Canopy website and is the first humidifier ever to be sold at Sephora. Users love the product for it’s ease-of-use, sleek design and compact size.
