Hally I Gem Pen

Designing a Rhinestone Applicator for Hally with Patented Innovation

Doris Dev developed a rhinestone applicator for Hally, enabling users to add hair gems for extra sparkle. In doing so, we designed around an existing utility patent that covered two key claims: (1) an applicator with a dispenser, such as a disc or strip holding adhesive-backed gems, along with a movable plunger, and (2) a dispenser with a belt or disc arrangement featuring openings where adhesive-backed gems were placed.

Innovation

Developing Hally Hair’s Gem Pen with a Structured Approach

We developed Hally Hair’s Gem Pen through a structured three-phase process: Foundation, Exploration, and Refinement. In the Foundation phase, Doris Dev focused on understanding the product category and Hally Hair’s brand by researching market trends, gathering inspiration, and defining key design elements. These insights informed the Exploration and Refinement phases, ensuring the product aligned with brand goals and user needs.

Design Development

Precision Gem Applicator with a Reloadable Cartridge System

The pen features a reloadable cartridge system that holds a minimum of 15 gems, ensuring a smooth and reliable mechanism for advancing and dispensing each gem. Its design allows users to apply the gems directly to hair with precision and ease. The pen is also engineered to be easily opened and reloaded, enhancing its reusability. Additionally, Doris Dev incorporated a user-friendly solution to clear misfeeds, ensuring a seamless experience for consumers.

Engineering

Engineering for Optimal User Experience

For the engineering portion of Hally Hair’s Gem Pen, Doris Dev focused on developing a robust mechanism while considering the user experience. The team brainstormed various approaches to ensure seamless interaction with the product, identifying and analyzing comparable mechanism references to guide the design. This process laid the foundation for creating an intuitive and functional tool that aligns with the intended user experience, while ensuring the engineering supported the product’s practical application.

The Results

The Gem Pen launched in early 2024.

“Hally’s Gem Pen makes it easy to load up with sparkles. She just needs to fill the applicator pen with an included stack of gems, pop the cap on, and press the tool’s spring-loaded button to stamp on the jewels. ”
